WASHINGTON (TND) — MSNBC host Joy Reid has joined the chorus of harsh criticism against billionaire entrepreneur Elon Musk amid news he will purchase the company and has plans to take it private.
Reid said during her show Tuesday that Musk “misses” the “Old South Africa in the ’80s,” which was infamously a period of apartheid.
They don’t want to just be in the club. They’ve been described as being on the outside of the culture looking in through the glass, but they don’t just want to come in. They want to come in and be able to punch people in the face and walk around and laugh about it and to not have anyone be able to stop them. The thing is, the enjoyment they get out of being in this ‘town square’ is being able to harass people, being able to attack people,” Reid said. “There was a time when people had the double hashtags around their names because they were Jewish, and right-wingers were saying ‘get in the oven’ any time you made any benign comment on Twitter. They attacked women. The misogyny was crazy on Twitter for a while. Elon Musk, I guess he misses the Old South Africa in the ’80s, he wants that back.
Reid also criticized Musk’s thoughts about free speech and how it relates to Twitter.
“We have a First Amendment. There is no ‘free speech’ problem,” Reid said. “Twitter is not the government, Twitter is a private company that can say, ‘No. You’re not allowed to be a Nazi on Twitter.’”
Reid is well known for making outlandish statements about people she does not agree with.
Following Republican South Carolina Sen. Tim Scott’s announcement of his opposition to Supreme Court Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson, Reid said the Black senator was going along with racism.
Reid is but one of many taking their frustrations out on Musk over his pending acquisition of Twitter.
Liberal writer Shaun King let out a tirade of tweets Monday after it was confirmed Twitter accepted Musk’s bid to buy the company. In one of his tweets targeting Musk, King said that “at its root” the billionaire’s desire to purchase Twitter “is not about left vs right. It’s about white power.”
Even Twitter’s own executives are reportedly throwing shade at Musk.
Leslie Berland, Twitter’s Chief Marketing Officer, questioned Twitter CEO Parag Agrawal in leaked audio released by Project Veritas over his statements from a previous meeting indicating he trusted Musk’s ability to lead the company.
“What made you trust him?” Berland, who charged Musk with having “questionable ethics” during the audio, asked Agrawal.
